A beast with a heart of stone

"When King Lear cries, "Ingratitude, thou marble-hearted fiend!" the contradictoriness of the image turns ingratitude into a monster of inexorable evil, at once cold and furious, filled with intentional malevolence and yet unmoved. It is a beast with a heart of stone." (The Gift of Thanks, Margaret Visser, 2008; page 310).
