The action of gratitude is always particular. Some particular someone owes a debt of gratitude to some particular someone else. That particularity enables the privacy of relationship.
Society's institutions need to support that privacy and that particularity because it is out of the overlapping action of those particular relationships that the coherence of society is woven.
