"From the receiver, [gratitude] calls for recognition, memory, intelligence, consideration, and justice. From the giver, when generosity is met with ingratitude, it requires forebearance, acceptance, and refusal to turn sour, no matter how hurt he might feel. If memory, justice, forgiveness, and the rest are expressive of human nature at is best, then so is gratitude. If not, then ingratitude is "natural," and all that we should expect."
