Like a hunger

The measure of the generosity of a community is not only in how broadly dispersed in the population are people who seek to perform acts of altruism, not only in how deeply (what proportion of their wealth) they are interested in dedicating to such acts, but also in how urgently they feel compelled to engage in them.
Imagine a society where the need to give is felt like a hunger which requires immediate satiation.
