The essence of the experience of desert is drama. What we want is the proper playing out of a narrative that enacts an equivalence between one action and some appropriate reaction.
Desert is the medium through which cause and effect plays out in the moral universe. In a world where justice rules we can say things happen because other things happened. Desert enacts some sort of divine motivation. Karma, bashert, desert – these are the ways we explain to ourselves why things happen the way they do.
