So long as the court Jew serviced the lord with financial support on the basis of personal relationships the function of the upper class Jews in society did not take on a political cast. Once the court Jew became an officer of a state court he became implicated in the political activities of that court, and his activities no longer depended exclusively on personal relations and became dependent on how the society defined desert.
