Political sovereigns as commercial enterprises

Imperialism developed because the governments of the great powers needed to join in with the program of capitalist expansion of both markets and of supplies of natural resources. The contention between the great powers that finally erupted into the First World War came about because they began to compete with each other as if they were commercial enterprises rather than competing and collaborating with each other as political sovereigns.
Trader values contaminated guardian values and the result was wholesale calamity.
