The inter-connectedness that comes with free trade also has the effect of making trade more involuntary. Along with barriers to entry into the market there are barriers to exit from the market.
If the exit barriers include having to go through social disruption, and if social disruption could lead to political outcomes that are favorable to those who would promote the free trade policy, the society could well be stuck in free trade despite an increase in welfare if they become self-sufficient.
That free-trade trap is part of the mechanism of the resource curse.
