The problem is society doesn't belong to anyone, which makes it easy for people who are takers to take society for their own. Often there's no-one watching the store.
When the people of Israel bequeath their national patrimony to YHWH they are putting Him in charge of who owns the nation. By having God own the nation of Israel it makes it harder for anyone else to come along and take it for their own.
