When a society descends into decadence the populace needs to be distracted by both bread and circuses. The bread comes in the form of the never-ending pursuit of material pleasure; the circuses come either in the form of empty entertainments and art as provocation or they come in the form of political theater and class warfare and extraction distraction.
The essence of product advertising in popular entertainments is the creation of just enough spiritual fulfillment and emptiness so that the audience member can come to feel that buying some material good or service will complete the experience and make him feel whole. The cultural context and illusion created by public relations are surrogates for the spiritual reality that comes of living in a healthy civil society.
Public relations is the tool of false authority that uses the instruments of power and of the social order to promote spiritual emptiness rather than spiritual fulfillment. False authority is what, in the biblical context, was called false prophecy in the name of strange gods.
