The interests of those not present

A corporation differs from a government in the relation between the legal person and the natural person. In a corporation, the natural person serves the interests of the legal person; in a government, the legal person serves the interests of the natural person.
The sacred institutions represent the interests of those who are not present, be they divine, spiritual beings or be they former generations no longer alive or future generations not yet born.
