Humility and reverence before an empty universe

Self-effacement before a divine covenantal partner can result in a satisfactory life, lived with dignity and honor and meaning; self-effacement before a disenchanted society results in the sort of madness Lawrence of Arabia ultimately found.
Humility and reverence before an empty universe is almost an impossibility. Disenchantment almost demands the ruling elite to play the role of gods, it almost demands for hubris to come to define the secular leader's self-understanding.
