Easy pickin's

The market mechanism comes across as working most effectively not because people, under incentive to maximize their welfare, achieve the greatest good for the greatest number but because as an institution the market enables and rationalizes the easy pickin's that come from selfish behavior.
The Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution and the advance of the marketplace has turned the world into an uglier place where people befoul their own.
