Loss of face could be catastrophic

Small children obey the primitive, reflexive code of honor because for them there is no law.
In the social setting of only children, beyond the reach of adult supervision, lawlessness prevails and one must fend for oneself. Loss of face could be, if not fatal, then certainly catastrophic.
The problem of failed states is that lex talionis rules there. So the first value system is of small childhood and it is the right-wing reflexive honor code. Only later does distrust of authority kick in with its left-tilted appetite for sincerity and authenticity.
