The left's distrust of authority is just the leading edge of a larger movement throughout the world against the prerogatives of leadership which fall under the rubric of honor, which prerogatives weakened substantially over the course of the 20th century.
The vanishing of those prerogatives is now filtering down to the secondary centrist institutions, and the authority and code of honor of those institutions are coming apart under the pressure of discredited leadership on the one hand and consumerism and the materialism of the secularists on the other hand. The consumerism and materialism is about the weakening of the codes of honor and the codes of dignity that describe and entail the actions of market making. The centrist institutions are there to fortify those two codes, and when they don't we get the kind of crony capitalism we see flourishing today.
