Sanctity defines not how to achieve some objective but how to moderate the will that is needed for that achievement. The original sanctity in the Bible is God's limiting His creative project. It is not the creation of the world we celebrate, it is the cessation of the creation of the world that He consecrates and that we celebrate. That mitigating function is where the sanctity kicks in.
Secular culture teaches how to deal with the breakup of a relationship; traditional culture teaches how to moderate one's actions so that the relationship doesn't break up. Both cultures relate to the intermediate domain that is offset from the main objective that wants to be achieved but one culture deals with inevitable loss while the other culture deals with self-restraint that rsults in success.
The function of sanctity in a society is for an entire culture to promote the values of self-restraint. It takes a nation to keep a diet.
