The utopian left and the ultra-Orthodox right share an anti-Messianism.
When the ultra-Orthodox place unattainable, super-natural conditions on the coming of the Moshiach what they are really doing is arguing against a political reading of the biblical teachings. That non-political reading comports well with the ultra-Orthodox leadership's own politicization.
The rabbinic regime in recent times could not afford to recognize the essential political teachings of the ancient biblical regime because to do so would have threatened rabbinic power: they have a different understanding of the nature of sacred institutions as well as of their own role in the conduct of those institutions.
The ultra-Orthodox promote a world where secular leadership, while seen as necessary and a necessary evil, ought as much as possible to be weak. So long as the secular leadership is weak, the ultra-Orthodox can arrogate to themselves a measure of political power as they work to indoctrinate their followers into a culture of servility.
