The left and the right dispute each other about the management in society of rulers and followers. The left distrusts rulers and wants them weak and compliant. The right distrusts followers and wants them servile and compliant. Neither trusts either the rulers or the followers to promote a system where they are both strong and dedicated to a muscular civil society.
The biblical regime's covenantal structure is one predicated on mutual trust between leaders and followers because, in the covenantal system, the essence of the political relationship is respect and affection and gift exchange.
The covenant kicks over into the domain of abundance where trust is possible and out of the domain of scarcity where trust is out of the question.
