Covenants are not just about the sentiments of having a relationship, they're also about what the two parties will do for each other in practice. If they stop doing for each other, practically, then that all by itself abrogates the covenant.
The covenant between God and the Children of Israel once upon a time had a practical side that long ago ceased functioning.
