The opiate suppresses the appetite

The resource curse is a curse because the resource overwhelms the logic of the social order.
The action of the Midas Touch has it that the marginal unit has increasing returns. A world that is truly and unlimitedly governed by increasing returns is unsustainable because the increasing returns overwhelm the system's ability to consume, and hence to sustain itself. It is the world of the drug addict who will take the opiate over food, even if it means he will starve to death.
The opiate suppresses the appetite.
