To live in a steady state system, a stationary economy, and to focus the economy's creative energy not on growing but on improving the condition of the extant population is to emphasize design behavior over maximization behavior.
Design behavior emphasizes balance over imbalance. Right now the cultural drivers of entrepreneurship require the combination of the spiritual and the material for the sake of maximizing something. That turns out to be a remarkably strong propeller of innovation and enterprise, in the best sense of the word. It allows people to work aggressively and creatively to build tools and organizations that enable improvements in social systems and communications technology.
What would an alternative cultural driver look like that enabled people to build organizations that combine the spiritual and the material for the sake of keeping things in balance? To keep things in balance is to have to spend a whole lot of energy describing the scope rather than the scale of the enterprise. That's the key. Entrepreneurial enterprise focuses on the challenges of scale while ecological enterprise needs to focus on the scope.
It is in the proper definition of scope that the matter of design for the sake of balance comes to the fore. That is the challenge of the marriage of the commercial to the political realms that's going on right now in the grass roots left.
