Cyclical vs linear processes correspond to lossless vs lossy processes, which correspond to timeless vs time-directed processes. Entropy is the measure of time and change, as is information. Somewhere in here is the difference between abstract knowledge and carnal knowledge, between neurons and hormones, between structure that can change instantly vs structure that is fixed and can change only at substantial pain, if ever.
