Production & reproduction

Procreation takes two forms: for the individual, as nutritional production; and for the species, as sexual reproduction. The two are linked in Scripture:
  • Eve eats the fruit, which unleashes her sexuality; Noah brings a flesh offering, which tames his sexuality.
  • Whenever a local famine drives any of the patriarchs out of their encampments we see a corresponding opportunity for sexual union between the respective matriarchs and the local ruler.
  • When Yaaqov sends his sons to Egypt to buy food Yosef accuses them of coming to uncover the land's sexual/erotic core.
The mechanism for providing for the perdurance of the individual is the free market where hunger is quelled by consumption into satiation; the mechanism for enabling the perdurance of the species is gift exchange where urges are fulfilled into contentment.
Hunger drives incentives whereas urges drive motivation.
