Virtue is its own (and the best) reward

Just deserts leads to happiness and the deeper satisfaction, the inalienable satisfaction, that comes with knowing one's life is well lived. Maximizing welfare leads to pleasure, which only rarely results in happiness.
Virtue is its own reward, and, because it results in a reward that cannot be taken away, virtue is the best reward, better than the passing pleasures of wealth and comfort.
