When they speak of purity

Rather than for the sake of maximizing some objective function, the spur to action in a gift economy is obligation and the impulse to set things right. 
The movement in debt economies is to achieve an internal equilibrium rather than an external one, as, for example, it is achieved in the marketplace. 
To maintain that internal equilibrium might well be what they are talking about when they speak of purity.
