The logic of the establishment of the ancient State of Israel was to situate this weak, small nation between strong, large, imperial powers who were always contending with each other. In the modern world Israel once again functions as a fulcrum between great imperial powers only this time the powers are not within the region.
That was the problem with the Second Temple Israelite nation. They didn't know how to deal with the distant imperial power that was Rome.
