The season of confrontation

The messianic self-understanding of the Jewish people conflicts with the people’s religious self-understanding. When the religious leaders concocted the messianic story they were in fact using it as a way to kick the political can down the road. The religious leaders of the Jewish people have for centuries been resisting the political possibility of Israel. 

We have come now to the season of confrontation. One way or another the Jewish people will have to get the dead weight of their religious leadership off their backs so they can turn their attentions to the serious challenges of a robust political and economic and spiritual life for the people.
