The Bible's admonition against avodah zarah, against stranger service, is a call for ideological purity. To serve strange rulers, rulers who do not lead in the Bible's direction, is to relegate the Jewish people to the ordinary destiny of all the other nations of the world, a destiny of unsustainability, corruption and collapse. In the case of the inhabitants of the Land of Israel, that destiny would be manifested in exile.
