Two kinds of 'why'

What transforms a behavior into an act is justice. A society must uphold some notion of justice in order for its members to be able to conduct their affairs as actors who possess autonomous motivation rather than in behavior that bespeaks servility and exogenous causation. When we seek reasons for conduct rather than reasons for behavior we are seeking justifications and evaluations rather than causes and mechanisms.
