Losing reverence

Capital and the mob connect up when the bourgeoisie embrace the values of both. The middle class, in its degenerate form, makes legitimate the values of plunder the capitalist, upper class has been promoting, while at the same time it makes legitimate the outlaw values of resentment and violence seething through the lower class mob.
The upper classes will tend toward economic infertility, and will try to solve their problems through plunder; the lower classes will tend to political fury, and will try to solve their problems through death-cults.
The collapse of modern democracy comes not from the top or from the bottom but from the middle. It is when the neck stiffens that the nation can no longer tolerate the immediate presence of the divine. Other peoples degrade in different ways – some from the top, some from the bottom – but a people that promotes the values of civil society and the dignity and decency of the common man will stay resolute so long as the middle class does its duty.
When the middle class gives up on its sense of what's right, the nation is doomed. It loses reverence.
