Japan may well represent the great economic miracle of the past 150 years but it is important to keep in mind that Japan succumbed to becoming a despotism that attacked the US while allying itself with Hitler in WWII. Something about the direction in which the Japanese leadership took the country certainly didn't jive well with common human decency.
