It is an interesting but a not very well appreciated notion that the American experience, historically, from the outset, was shaped more by the ideas of race struggle than it was by the ideas of class struggle. Racist distinctions and racist values were the ones that defined the internal ideological battles in American history far more than did the ideological battles of the upper and lower classes, which battles shaped much of, say, English and Russian ideology and history. The story of America is the story of race struggles yielding into corporate struggles.
