A bewildered people still resides in the wilderness. They don't know where they belong or what belongs to them. With the fall of the ancien regime and the disenchantment of the world into a secular universe the people of (especially) Europe became bewildered and subject to the influence of a host of pernicious systems of thought and ideology.
